THE BISHOP & THE BISON

Location

The Bishop & The Bison boutique hotel is located less than one mile from the city centre of York, accessible either by an easy 15 minutes’ walk along the old Roman road direct to Petersgate, the city walls and the Minster itself, or via the tree-lined River Ouse pathway.

The British history publication An Inventory of the Historical Monuments in the City of York Outside the City Walls East of the Ouse (Volume 4, H.M. Stationery Office, 1975), describes over 400 years of history that is on daily display for you to explore and enjoy along the walk to the sights. Foremost are St. Peter’s School, founded in 627 C.E., the nineteenth century drinking trough for cattle on the triangular Clifton Green, a seventeenth century public house, and a medieval plague stone, which may have been where money was exchanged by submerging coins into the disinfecting powers of vinegar.

The Bishop & The Bison is located in the leafy suburb of Clifton, less than a mile from the iconic Minster and yards away from the mighty River Ouse. Just moments from our front door, you can access the stunning riverside walks, the Bar Walls to demonstrate you are as spry as ever, the majestic Minster and its Chapter House, the shrieks and cries of the Jorvik Centre, the mid-fourteenth century industrious Merchant Adventurers’ Hall, the famous medieval marketplace and shopping of The Shambles, bustling cafes and restaurants, and everything else that York has to offer.
